On Sunday, September 15th, the Friends of Bedford Depot Park will host its second annual “Railroad Day.” Like last year’s event, a variety of activities for both adults and children are planned from 1-4 p.m. in and around the Freight House and railcar at 120 South Road in Bedford. All Railroad Day activities will be open to the public and free of charge.
Beginning at 1 p.m., Bill Deen (author of Minuteman Railroad: Boston & Maine’s Lexington Branch) will lead a historical tour, starting in the railcar and continuing at the passenger depot and other places in the former rail yard. Henry Carpenter (a.k.a. “Conductor Henry”) will read children’s stories in the railcar at 1:30 and 3:30. From 2:00–3:00, “Magic Railroad Conductor” Richard Miller, with partner Dawn Kelley, will perform up-close magic at the railcar.
Family activities throughout the afternoon will include train-related crafts, bike decorating, cornhole, bubbles, and a scavenger hunt. Visitors will have an opportunity to learn about the accomplishments of FBDP and ways to get involved. The Freight House welcome center and railcar, with their model railroad and museum displays, will be open as usual that day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Freight House offers snacks, beverages, and a variety of merchandise for purchase. All proceeds from sales support Depot Park and rail history preservation.
